How Do Rehearsals and Terms Work?
We rehearse at least 40 times per year, and usually perform at least once per term. Our year is split into 4 terms of roughly 10 weeks, usually factoring in an ‘off week’ mid-term, and a week or so’s break between terms, usually coinciding with Christmas or October holidays. On occasion, terms may run over 11 or 12 weeks depending on venue availability, national holidays, etc., but the overall number of rehearsals always equates to at least 4 terms of 10 sessions.
When Do You Rehearse?
This depends on your choir! Our West End choirs meet on Wednesday evenings, and Pilrig choir meets on Thursday evenings. Check out our choirs page for more information.
Will There Be An Audition?
There are no auditions involved whatsoever, and everyone is welcome to join regardless of singing experience.
Do I Have To Perform?
There is no requirement to perform if you don’t want to (although most of our members find this the best bit about being part of a choir!). If you want to just come along and rehearse without the pressure of performing, you can do that too.
When Do We Perform?
We perform at least once per term, with performance details notified as soon as they are confirmed. Members are asked to register their interest separately for performances, and all members are able to sign up to perform for every event we do.
Will I Have To Sing By Myself?
You will never be asked to sing by yourself, to audition, or to otherwise be put on the spot. We know this can be nerve-wracking and uncomfortable, and there’s simply no need for solo singing at any stage during rehearsals or performances. All our rehearsals are run with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, so there’s no need to be nervous!
Do I Need To Read Sheet Music?
There is no need to read sheet music to join our choir. We learn from audio tracks, lead sheets and plenty of practice – a totally accessible way for anyone to learn our arrangements, whether they’ve had musical training or not!
Where Can I Access Choir Materials?
Choir materials are available on the members’ area, which is accessible from our members’ page. You will receive a link to set-up logins for our members’ page once you have completed your GoCardless instruction – please note this is a manual process, so it may take up to 24 hours to receive your confirmation. At the rehearsal, we provide copies of materials you can use in session – all we ask is these are returned to the choir leader at the end of each session to reduce paper waste and save trees.
Do I Need To Attend Every Rehearsal?
There is no need to attend every rehearsal, and you don’t need to excuse yourself if you can’t make it along. However, we obviously encourage members to come to as many rehearsals as possible – this makes us sound better, means everyone is on the same page for performances, and makes it all the more fun too.
What Songs Do We Sing?
We sing contemporary pop and rock repertoire you’ll hopefully be familiar with, with an emphasis on giving us the best repertoire for our performances.
Do different choirs rehearse the same repertoire?
All our choirs cover the same repertoire eventually, and you are free to make it to an alternative session if you miss your own in the week.
If I’m in an Early session and I’m running late, can I join in the Late session?
This isn’t a problem. If you are looking to move choir permanently, please email firstname.lastname@example.org so we can update our records accordingly.
Can I bring a friend/relative to a rehearsal?
Not a problem – just ask your friend to sign up for a free taster session at edinburghcontemporarychoir.com/free-taster so we know they are coming!
